I was given cake decorating books, pans, and supplies for Christmas from my dad and his wife, Megan. Tyler's upcoming birthday is the first reason I have found to practice my non-existant skills. It is also the first reason I have found to spend a large amount of time making and decorating a cake. I started by making a double batch of cake batter (made from scratch). I needed a double batch because there will not be enough cake for all our birthday guests, so I also needed to make some cupcakes. The hard part of a double batch is correctly splitting the batter in half--the amount I needed to put in the cake pan. I guessed wrong and ended up with a cake that was dripping large amounts of batter over the edge while it baked. I thought it would be okay, I just kept watching it. About 5 minutes before the cake would have been cooked, our oven burst into flames (from all the batter on the bottom). I had to extinguish the fire, and my first cake was ruined. I started over completely later on in the day (after the oven had been cleaned). The second cake was a success, and I am also pleased with the way the finished product turned out. Check it out!

Grandpa Keith and Grandma Megan says:
Happy Birthday Tyler! Have lots of fun. Wish we could have a piece of that cake.
Hi Amy,
Your cake is beautifull! I'm so impressed that you carried on after the oven caught fire! I believe I would have given up and waited till the next birthday. You are a trooper!
My first cake (or second, third, forth, ect...) never looked as professional as yours and Michelle's. You two are naturals!
Love,
Megan
PS. I hope the big party goes great! We will be thinking of you.
WAY TO GO AMY!!! This cake rocks! I'm so amazed by all the work that went into it, not just baking the cake twice, but putting all that frosting on! I started working on Susie's cake, it think it will be pretty cute. I'll have to call you and tell you about it.
Your cake looks amazing! I wish I could have hired you to make my wedding cake! I can't believe that Tyler is going to be 3 years old. I still remember when you called to tell me the exciting news. What a cute family you have, including you! Thanks for the rsvp. We will miss you on our BIG DAY, but appreciate your kind thoughts and encouragement. Take care and Happy Birthday Tyler!
Oops! Sorry Amy, I deleted one of the above comments because it posted twice. I guess I was not patient and pushed the summit button before it finally processed.
