Fourth of July Festivities

Michelle and I planned a fun week of Fourth of July Festivities...mainly fun crafts for the kids. On Monday we made red, white, and blue beaded bracelets. Yesterday we tie-dyed shirts--and they turned out awesome! We attempted to buy the $2.50 Flag Shirts from Old Navy on Monday, and Tyler was a bit depressed when they told us they were all sold out. Michelle suggested we tie-dye t-shirts red, white, and blue. With Rachael's tie-dying expertise (plus some information from some online tutorials), I'd have to say that we created some fabulous Fourth of July t-shirts. What made the activity even better was that everyone got involved! It was so much fun. I will definitely post pictures of our results...they are currently being washed. Today we made Star-Spangled Wavers. These also turned out super cute and the kids love running around waving their "star wands". Tomorrow's activities will include July 4th Pinwheels and star cookie decorating. I'll post pictures at the end of the week with the kids decked out in their Patriotic Creations. Okay...now I have to retract my bragging about our tie-dye shirts. They were awesome when we took them out of the bags. But, we just washed them and all the white spots are pink. The red and blue faded and the white turned pink. I am soooo disappointed! One of many factors may be what affected the results. The dye was RIT dye--very cheap. We didn't soak the shirts in Soda Ash prior to dying them. And, we just washed the shirts with normal detergent. Maybe if we changed one or all of these things, they would have held their color.

The shirts still look great and very patriotic!! I'm sure Betsy Ross had the same problem with her first few washings of the Flag!

Looks like so much fun!!

Love,
Grandma Megan

PS. Do the kids enjoy playing with the fish in the pool? or does it not work.
