A couple weeks prior to Thanksgiving, Tyler (in anticipation of the coming holiday) asked, "What fun things do we do on Thanksgiving?" I told him, "We eat turkey!" But, I just don't think that answer was good enough. I don't think just eating turkey is fun enough for a 5 and a 3 year old. No cousins were coming to visit, so they didn't have visitors to look forward to. And, it's not like Kindergartners love to have days off from school. The more and more I thought about it, the more and more I realized Tyler posed a really good question.
At that moment it became my goal to make sure we did some fun things on Thanksgiving to ensure the kids had good memories revolving around the holiday. The Tuesday before, Susie and I celebrated with Tyler's Kindergarten class and ate a Thanksgiving Feast--snack style. Really it was just crackers, turkey lunch meat, cheese, grapes, and cookies. But the kids enjoyed it, so that's all that mattered. On Wednesday, Tyler, Susie, and I created place tags for the table. We used water color paint (all I had on hand) and our little kid fingers and thumbs to make turkey bodies and feathers. I drew on the face and legs. And Tyler, our expert writer, wrote all the names on the tags. His handwriting is really exceptional!
Late Thanksgiving morning, we ate some some hors dourves, and then headed outside and started up some scooter races. Man is Tyler fast! He is so speedy, he is very close to beating all of us on his scooter. After a lot of races, we came inside and started our pin the football on the goal post game. We played three rounds, laughed a ton, and the winners were (of course) Tyler, Susie, and a three-way tie between Mark, Kevin, and Craig. Kevin and the kids ended up with the candy prizes--Nerds Ropes.
Dinner was fantastic. Brittney brought the seven layer salad and a homemade berry pie (yummy!). I contributed the baked yams, jell-0 salad, and stuffing. I'm pretty sure Susie only ate the delicious homemade rolls (made by Jane) and nothing else. Tyler, on the other hand, ate just about everything and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a great day!
