Wow. I've never given much thought to the small "holidays" like April Fool's Day until having kids. It really changes things. Little celebrations help break up the monotony of everyday life with kids and really just adds fun to our otherwise unexciting lives. I started the morning by dying water with food coloring and offering it to the kids as juice. They were pretty offended when their juice had absolutely no flavor. :) We decided to pull the same joke on Grandpa Mark, and that's when our day of jokes began.
It was really interesting to watch the differences in our kids' personalities. April Fool's Day really showed how different they can be. Tyler, who has always been much more mild and obedient, could hardly stand to tell all the "lies" that accompanied the jokes we were pulling on everyone. Susie, on the other hand, was more than willing to add to the "lies" with more "lies" to keep the joke afloat for as long as possible. Hmmm...you think I need to worry about her as she gets older?
For instance, Tyler and I decided we would have him drive his bike out of view. He was going to run into the house and tell Kevin he had crashed his bike and his tire broke off. He got all the way back to the house and all he could say was, "Uh....uh....uh....can't Susie say it?" Susie instantly piped in, "Tyler broke his wheel off his bike!" As soon as she said that Tyler even slunk back outside and tried to stay completely out of the joke. I had to give him a little encouragement to follow Kevin and Susie down to his bike.
Not too long after that, Susie started in with all sorts of "jokes". And every time anyone doubted her prank, she would just add to it to try to make her victims into believers. She told Grandpa Mark there was a bee on his ear. When he replied, "I can't hear it," Susie answered back with, "Bzzzzzz...". Tyler actually told Grandpa there were chipmunks in the backyard. When I jokingly asked if it was Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, Mark said he couldn't hear any singing. So, what do you think Susie did to fix that problem? She started singing. She even went as far as taking another drink of her food coloring water in the morning to prove to her grandpa that it really was yummy juice.
Good thing April Fool's Day only comes once a year. By the end of the day, all the joking and pretending to be fooled really got exhausting. However, I'm sure one year my kids are going to get me good. Then I'll wish they were still so little that I was still pretending to be played by all of their jokes.
Hope you all had a Happy April Fool's Day too!
