My good friend Kelley and her family always make "Cookie Houses" before Christmas. We decided to steal their idea and incorporate it into our own version of gingerbread houses. We had sugar wafer cookies and graham crackers, royal frosting (I actually bought some meringue powder and made some real royal frosting--it turned out great and dried super hard like cement!), and more than 25 varieties of candies for decorating the houses. The kids and I set the entire project up and created "Awards" for "The Tallest House", "The Coolest House", "The Tastiest House", "The Craziest House", "The Fanciest House", "The Healthiest House", etc.
I'm not sure how many family members really wanted to dive into the project, but we eventually got everyone involved and I think it turned into a fun time! Everyone was exceptionally creative! The kids "judged" the houses when it was over. Tyler won "The Coolest House", and Susie won "The Fanciest House". Jackson won "The Craziest House" because his had pieces that were "planned" to look like they had fallen over. Kevin's Christmas bridge (it is supposed to resemble the bridge we drive over to get to Grandpa Keith's house) won "The Straightest House" and "The Chubbiest House". Check it out Dad! It might give you some ideas on how to decorate your bridge next year!
We had such a great time decorating our candy houses. So long to gingerbread house kits! Our kids have too much creativity for you!
