A Sunny (but chilly!) California Thanksgiving

November 23rd, 2010 - December 1st, 2010

We had an amazing time in Cali! We relaxed, ate good food, did a little sight-seeing, spent time with family, and totally took over Marc & Michelle's apartment! Our family of 5 is getting hard to accommodate. Amyah was an angel during our trip. She actually slept in the closet of the room we were staying in (not much different from home...). The kids attempted to sleep in Jackson and Bennett's room, but that was a bust after the giggling never ceased. Bennett was extremely disturbed by our crazy kiddos, so we decided they needed to crash in our room. We all slept in one room, and filled the entire floor. There really was not a single inch of floor space left. But, we slept comfortably. I was a bit cold at night. That's what happens when you sleep on an air mattress. And, of course, it's California, so a heater is out of the question! Let's just say that once I bundled up and slept with my hood over my head and about 10 blankets stacked on top of our bed, I was very comfortable! It seemed so comical since we were in California of all places!

The worst part of the vacation was I got a pretty bad cold and had it during the entire break. Every night I would start feeling horrible by 9 or 10 and have to go to bed while the other adults stayed up and watched movies. I felt a bit lame, but oh well.

We left for California a day early. Our original departure day was Wednesday, but after the state of Utah started predicting "white out" conditions on Wednesday, we decided to head out on Tuesday. The trip went fairly well, and we arrived at about 6pm.

We did all sorts of things during our visit. Kevin's parents, Craig, and I took Tyler, Susie, and Jackson to the Science Museum on Wednesday.

Thursday was Thanksgiving. I failed to pull out my camera to document the actual holiday. Kevin's entire family was there, except Ryan and Brittney. Even Rachael and Jonathan spent the afternoon with us (they were actually in California visiting Jon's family).

We spent the afternoon at the beach on Friday. The kids had a good (and cold) time running through the waves. Jackson ended up with soaking wet shorts, so he was walking around in undies and a sweatshirt by the end of our adventure. I love the picture of him on the pier! What a funny kid!

On Saturday we watched the BYU - Utah game. Unfortunately BYU lost.

Sunday was Sunday. What more can I say? Nothing too exciting happened. However, everyone left that morning. We had a fun day spending time with just Marc and Michelle and their family.

Monday was by far one of the best days of the year! We took the kids to Disneyland. I'll elaborate on it in my next post. We had an amazing time. The kids had a blast. It was an almost perfect day (a few extra degrees of warmth would have have made it perfect!).

We also planned on leaving Tuesday, but my health was compromised after a long day at Disneyland. I was wiped out and had no energy to get our family ready to leave Monday evening after returning home from a day at Disney. We opted to rest and pack slowly on Tuesday and spend an extra day in California.

We departed a bit late on Wednesday. Of course we hit morning rush hour traffic. Not a great way to start the drive. Even better...Susie threw up (not unexpected by any means) about 30 minutes into the drive. She started whining from the back seat that she didn't feel good. I blew her off. I kept telling her we hadn't been in the car long enough and that a 30 minute car ride is how long we are often in the car at home. We even had a "barf bucket" ready, but I failed to hand it to her because I really didn't think she was sick. Next thing I knew, she threw up. Luckily it was only on her shirt (and it was only Captain Crunch). We quickly changed her clothes and continued on our way. We made it home in good time. I, however, was not ready to return home. Home meant real life, with real responsibilities, alarm clocks, school lunches, chores, carpools, and homework. Sometimes it feels too good to get away...
