First Day of School

August 15, 2011

School starts early in Arizona! However, the kids were ready to start. Moving to a new place in the middle of summer makes finding friends a little difficult. Both kids have done a good job finding their place in a new school.

First of all, I have to start by saying how awesome it is to live 3 houses away from an elementary school! Even in the hot heat of Arizona (I'm talking 115 degrees), we walk because it is so close! I love it! I love not having to carpool kids to and from school each day! I love that we have found good friends in our neighborhood for the kids to walk with. I only have to make the trek to the school right after lunch to bring Susie to afternoon kindergarten.

It's interesting to see how different the personalities of our kids help them thrive in different situations. Susie was very nervous leading up to the first day of school. Tyler was calm and collected. Susie made friends instantly and continues to ask everyone to be her friend at recess. She is so social and talkative. Tyler had a harder time finding friends for recess and lunch. However, after only one day without friends at recess, we encouraged and coached him on how to ask someone to play with him. He was brave and asked a child in his class to play with him at recess. Since that day he has been playing with that same friend each day. After a few days without friends to eat lunch with, he finally mustered the courage (and remembered) to ask his friend to sit with him at lunch. Now he has a pretty good group of friends (4 or 5 boys) he plays Superheros with at recess each day. Both kids are happy and thriving in school socially and academically.

I am loving my quiet afternoons at home while the kids are away at school and Amyah naps!
